In Hektik, the object is to destroy all the monsters on screen that chase the player around the level, with gameplay similar to Lode Runner. This can be done by digging holes in the walkway enemies on screen by digging holes in the walkways, then wait for a monster to fall into it, then fill up the hole. This makes the trapped monster fall down to the next level and be killed. There are two types of monsters. Hunters are red monsters who can fall down only one level and get killed. Chasers are green monsters that require falling down multiple levels before getting killed. The player's oxygen depletes as they progress through the levels. Players advance to the next level when all the monsters in the level have been killed.

You are entombed with the mutating monsters. Your only defense is your spade with which you can dig traps for them. Once you have trapped them you can push them to the level below and destroy them.
As you advance the monsters become more vicious and if you fail to push them to the lower level they will mutate and become more difficult to destroy. The mutations only start once you are into Level Two and continue through to Level 16 resulting in ever increasing difficulty.

As the monsters mutate in the following order Red to Green, to Yellow/Red they become difficult to destroy. Red requires to be pushed down one level only, the Green must drop through two consecutive levels and the Yellow/Red through three. However if you are skillful enough you can destroy them by dropping them on top of each other.
Your only limit is your oxygen supply which is displayed on your screen.
